GABRIELE EVERTZ
In (A-) Chromatics, a series of six lithographs, Gabriele Evertz makes subtle changes from the first to the last print. Starting with a warm-toned light print, she creates a composition of a horizontal rectangle divided into 9 equal vertical bars. This structure serves as a consistent element of the series. In the first print, “A-Chromatics I,” the artist alternates vertical gray and warm color bars. The shift in the next print brings the darker yellow forward, to create a new set of relationships with four new grays. The change is repeated in each successive print in the series until the last warm print (“A-Chromatics III”), with its deep reds, orange, and magenta. Next, A-Chromatics IV- VI follow a similar logic of subtle change, ending with cooler, darker tones. By maintaining the gradually changing color, Evertz entices the viewer to unravel the logic behind the subtly shifting palette.

Gabriele Evertz's work explores the dual languages of color and geometry. Combining different hues in addition to grays, the artist leads the viewer to experience color effects that change with viewing distance and duration. In her own words: "Attentive viewing may turn from phenomenological moments to states of reflection, which bring with them a heightened awareness of being-in-the-world where vision, thought, and feeling concur." In (A-) Chromatics, a series of six lithographs, Evertz arrives at a gradual shift between each print, asking the viewer to experience the subtle changes of color in the series as a whole.
