ELLEN BERKENBLIT

Ellen Berkenblit started working on this series of prints at Jungle Press in 2019. Deriving inspiration from new paintings in progress in her studio she worked on 3 large stones to create what were to become “Cheetah”, “Screamer”, “Leg”, and two smaller stones to make “Clara” and “Clarion.”

The challenge was to create a visual equivalent to the process she uses in her studio, where she quilts together a “canvas” grid made from separate pieces of printed fabric. The patterns of the fabric vary from top to bottom and side to side. Berkenblit then paints with oil paint over this grid of patterns.

The challenge to making the fabrics in print form was to separate the individual colors and patterns, and re-print them as multi-color lithographs on paper. We were able to essentially print the colored patterns as a visual “quilt” on the paper. On top of that, Ellen printed the black drawing and then the white “chalk” drawing on top. The result brings out the spontaneity and complex structure of the artist’s work.
