JUNGLE PRESS LTD
Since its founding in 1994 by printer Andrew Mockler, Jungle Press has produced a remarkable diversity of projects. From the expressive textures of Joan Snyder's prints to the photolithographs of Brian Wood, from the subtle coloring of Michael Mazur's work to the bold blues and blacks of Jacqueline Humphries' print, the editions reflect a broad range of sensibilities. Working in direct collaboration with master printers, each artists is encouraged to experiment with different ways of making, to bring out the process that best embraces their work as painter, sculptor or photographer.
We are very pleased to introduce you to our publications along with an introduction to our press. By selecting an individual artist from our artists page you will find both written and visual information as well as a biography of each artist. We feel that this format will help in gaining a better understanding of each artist's work.
Located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Jungle Press is open to the public for visits by appointment only. For more information please contact director Andrew Mockler.
Mission
Jungle Press Editions is dedicated to publishing work by outstanding contemporary artists. In collaboration with master printer Andrew Mockler, each artist develops a project that builds upon his notion of his own work and expands the nature of the print medium itself. Because Jungle Press is both a publisher and a workshop, we are able to oversee a project from its inception, through all phases of its production, and finally to its placement in important collections.
At Jungle Press, we are committed to hand processes: lithogrography, etching and relief printing, but at the same time feel excited about the advances of computer-based design and photographic techniques. In essence, the printer-artist collaboratsors are able to pick from one or all of these methods as the direction of the work necessitates.
Jungle Press believes that one of the strengths of printmaking is its ability to disseminate visual work of art to a wider audience. We believe this is possible through an attentive approach to the education and enlightenment of the public. Through gallery’s talks concerning an artist’s work and symposia and related printed texts, the underlying ideas behind the artistic works can be more fully understood and appreciated. As people acquire a firmer grounding behind the context within which a print is made, they can feel more open to exchange their won ideas.
As Jungle Press expands, we keep in mind the core motivation behind the workshop: the artist and printer working together to find a common language. The work that emerges brings the vision into tangible form and moves out into the world.
Collaboration
All the prints represented on this site are original prints, as the plates were worked on directly by the artists by hand. Proofing and printing was performed by Jungle Press printers in collaboration with the artist under their supervision and approval.
